Knitting @ the Library (Daytime Class)
Plan on joining talented instructor Marie DiPrimo for another series of classes for continuing or beginning knitters. What a great way to spend a morning or evening and end up with a project to be proud of! The first portion of every class will be devoted to teaching a specific knitting technique. Please bring scrap yarn and any size needles for this part of the class. The remainder of the class will be devoted to working on individual projects. If you are a first-time knitter, please bring 2 straight #10 knitting needles and one skein of worsted weight wool (3 ½-4 ounce skein). Experienced knitters bring the project you are currently working on or the materials for a new project you’re aching to begin. Don’t miss the fun, information and camaraderie! Classes fill fast so don’t delay.

Yearning for Poetry: How Abraham Lincoln & Walt Whitman Influenced One Another’s Writings 4/28/2015 2:00:00 PM
Yearning for Poetry: How Abraham Lincoln & Walt Whitman Influenced One Another’s Writings
Presented by Anne Starnes Kingsbury, Poet and Educator at The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association

Abraham Lincoln, statesman, and Walt Whitman, poet, were two of the most interesting and different figures of their era. Yet, these two became admirers of each other and their literary work. Many people can think back to their English literature classes, and recall the moving elegy to Lincoln, Oh Captain! My Captain, penned by Whitman after Lincoln’s death.

This lecture will examine the nature of their writings before and after the other’s influence, including Lincoln’s poetry and Whitman’s essays. Interesting anecdotal accounts will be included, and examples of speeches and poems will be read. This promises to be an enlightening literary afternoon for all!
