CONVERSATIONS WITH MUSIC: Joan Sutherland -- "La Stupenda" 7/7/2015 2:00:00 PM
CONVERSATIONS WITH MUSIC: Joan Sutherland -- "La Stupenda"
With Marc Courtade, Executive Director, Huntington Arts Council

Dame Joan Sutherland (1926-2010) was a celebrated Australian dramatic coloratura soprano noted for her contribution to the renaissance of the bel canto repertoire from the late 1950’s to the 1980’s. One of the major sopranos of the 20th Century, she was a singer of such power and range that she was named “La Stupenda” by Italian audiences. Sutherland had a voice of size and substance and, early in her career, trained at the Royal College of Music in London to become a great Wagnerian in the style of Kirsten Flagstad. However, her husband, the conductor Richard Bonynge encouraged her to concentrate on bel canto roles, showcasing her incomparable facility for fast runs and impeccable trills. Her friend Luciano Pavarotti called her the “Voice of the Century.” By 1959, Sutherland had retrained and was catapulted to international celebrity when she sang the title role in LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR at Covent Garden. She was soon singing all over the world and helped to continue the bel canto revival that began with Maria Callas. Her career as a major diva lasted for 30 years and she was acclaimed for her lead roles in the bel canto operas NORMA, I PURITANI, LA SONNAMBULA, LA FILLE DU REGIMENT. She also sang standard repertoire—such as title roles in DON GIOVANNI, RIGOLETTO, LA TRAVIATTA. With stunning audio and video clips.
