ART IN THE AFTERNOON: Picasso's Picassos 9/10/2015 2:00:00 PM
ART IN THE AFTERNOON: Picasso's Picassos
with Vivian Gordon, Lecturer, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC

The National Picasso Museum, in a historic 17th Century mansion in Paris, the beautiful Hotel Sale recently reopened after five years of expansion and renovation. This talk—a virtual tour—will show highlights from the museum’s extraordinary collection of art from every phase of Picasso’s long and varied career. Starting from a student painting, when Picasso was only fourteen, the museum displays examples from his Blue and Rose Periods, and both paintings and sculpture tracing the development of Cubism. The collection is also rich in later works, including striking portraits of family, mistresses, and friends—and extends from the 1920’s to the early 1970’s. Many of these pieces carried deep meaning for Picasso who kept them in his own possession and compared them to “pages from my diary.” The holdings also include works by other artists that Picasso valued—Cezanne, Degas, Seurat and Matisse, along with Iberian bronzes and a fair amount of African art, which greatly influenced the famous Spanish artist. In addition, the mansion contains paintings that Picasso created after his 70th birthday. He once quite tellingly said, “I am the greatest collector of Picassos in the world.” A spectacular glimpse in vivid PowerPoint into that fabulous world.
