Sign up at the Reference Desk beginning January 2nd. You can read or listen to your selections, fiction or non-fiction, and when finished, fill out a brief review form. These forms will be collected and entered in our weekly raffle. Just one book is your ticket to prizes, a luncheon, and more!

Need a suggestion? Use our Reader’s Advisory handout, visit our website and click on Novelist for read-alikes, or talk to one of our librarians at the Reference Desk.

All reviews are due by Friday, March 24th. Participants who have read and reviewed one or more books will be invited to our Swing into Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, April 4th. During the luncheon, one lucky reader will win our Spring Gift Basket.

CONVERSATIONS WITH MUSIC: Aida Love Triangle Gone Wrong… Or Right? with Tanisha Mitchell, Librarian and Music Lecturer

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Bethpage Public Library
Auditorium & Lobby
Aida, an opera in four acts composed by Giuseppe Verdi, was commissioned by and first performed at the grand opening of the Khedival Opera House in Cairo, Egypt, in 1871. Today, the work holds a central place in the operatic canon, and it is performed every year around the globe, over 1,100 times at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House alone. This opera offers the ultimate in “grand opera” spectacle, with an ill-fated love triangle at its center, combining themes of purity, lust, and ultimately, betrayal.

Tanisha Mitchell, a librarian, was named a “Mover & Shaker” by Library Journal. She also advises opera libraries and provides curating and archival experience to make their collections more accessible. She will discuss Aida’s story and its musical highlights to both teach and inspire opera lovers. Don’t miss her first visit to our library!

Long Island Reads 2017: Dead Wake by Erik Larson Presented by David Houston & Diana Heinlein

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Bethpage Public Library

Erik Larson grew up in Freeport, Long Island to become “one of the modern masters of popular narrative non-fiction”, according to the New York Times. In 2004 his unforgettable Devil in the White City quickly hit the New York Times bestsellers list, and stayed there for five years. In 2015 his Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania was published to critical acclaim and again reached number one on the New York Times Non-fiction Best Seller List.

Full of glamour, mystery, and real-life suspense, Dead Wake captures the sheer drama and emotional power of a disaster that helped place America on the road to war. David Houston and Diana Heinlein will perform a dramatic reading in the style of a radio play from this dynamic novel, using the lush suspenseful music from the symphonic work and film scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
